Where to Stay in Uluwatu: Handpicked Hotels for Every Budget & Travel Style

If you’re planning your trip to Bali and are hoping to see breathtaking cliffs and sunsets, enjoy long beach days and chill energy, and maybe even attempt a surf lesson — Uluwatu is a perfect spot for you!

But deciding where to stay in Uluwatu can be overwhelming because it isn’t super walkable.

This means that you need to pick an area and hotel wisely, based on your interests and the activities you want to partake in during your time in Uluwatu.

I’ve done all the research so I can break down the best areas and hotels in Uluwatu in a single post! You’ll be able to book your stay with confidence in the area that is best suited for you, your travel style, and your budget!

Best Areas to Stay in Uluwatu

If you’re already familiar with the main areas of Uluwatu, and are just trying to figure out the best accommodation option for you, skip ahead to the next section of the post for my Uluwatu accommodation recs by budget and travel style.

Quick Travel Tips for Uluwatu

Before diving into all the details about where to stay in Uluwatu, I wanted to start with a few quick tips so you are best prepared for your time in Uluwatu.

1. The best options for transportation are a) renting a scooter or b) using Grab or Gojek ride shares. Distances can be far in Uluwatu, so using taxis can get pricey in this area!
   
2. The cliffs in Uluwatu offer wonderful views and sunset spots, but they also mean you’ll have a steep climb down to most beaches. Be prepared for many stairs!
   
3. There are many incredible sunset spots around Uluwatu. My favorite was at Lucky Fish Lounge on Bingin Beach, but Karang Boma Cliff and Single Fin are other popular options.
   
4. Uluwatu is known for its chill, surfer vibes. If you’re a beginner, head to Balangan Beach; if you’re advanced, you’ll want to check out Padang Padang or Uluwatu Beach.
   
5. The nightlife here is more relaxed — think sunset drinks rather than all night parties.
   
6. Pick where to stay in Uluwatu based on your interests and travel styles:
   • Bingin Beach area for surf and cafes

Uluwatu “Neighborhoods”

When planning your trip, I suggest booking your accommodation one to two months in advance if you’re able for the best selections; however, even if you’re booking last minute, you should be able to find some good options if you’re flexible!

Before diving into my top recommendations for hotels, I wanted to highlight five different “neighborhoods” in Uluwatu.

Each of these areas offers a slightly different vibe and will be best suited to different types of travelers, so this breakdown should help you narrow down which area would be best for your stay in Uluwatu!

Bingin

If you love cafes and are looking for a laid-back surfer vibe with mid-range stays, Bingin Beach is the spot for you!

Bingin is close to many local warungs and cute cafes, has an incredible beach nearby, and great surf breaks! I also think it’s a great spot for solo travelers or couples looking for a relaxing escape.

One thing to note — for all of the Uluwatu area, but especially Bingin — is that there are a lot of stairs down to the beach area; so be prepared to do some climbing!

Padang Padang

The Padang Padang area is a great spot for first time visitors to Bali, and Uluwatu, as it has a very central location.

It’s buzzy, social, and an iconic spot to visit — perfect for backpackers and social travelers.

In Padang Padang, you’ll find the famous beach, smaller cafes, and surf camps!

One thing to look out for here is the crowds — the beach is small and the iconic, and the central location means that there are a lot of other tourists around.

Uluwatu Temple & Beach

If you’re looking for dramatic cliffs and sunsets paired with luxury stays, the Uluwatu Temple and Beach area is for you!

We stayed near this area in Uluwatu and really liked the central location — it was about 10-15 minutes by scooter to most of the places we went to in Uluwatu. With the quick rides, we opted to take advantage of Grab ride shares to get around!

Here you’ll find the Uluwatu Temple — famous for its incredible cliffside sunsets and the traditional Kecak fire dance — along with iconic beach bars, like Single Fin, and clifftop resorts.

One thing to note about this area is that it can be a bit more spread out, and with its resorts, it can also be a bit more pricey.

But as you’ll see in my top accommodation recommendations below, we were able to find a great mid-range option in this area as well!

Balangan

If you’re the type of traveler who prefers quieter areas with fewer crowds, or you’re a bit more budget-conscious, the Balangan area could be well-suited for you!

Balangan is great for more relaxed travelers, families, and those wanting to learn how to surf; its highlights being the long sandy beaches, beginner-friendly waves, and smaller crowds.

Because it is a quieter area of Uluwatu, you’ll want to keep in mind that there are limited restaurants and not much nightlife in Balangan.

Dreamland

Finally, if you’re hoping to spend a few days relaxing by the resort pool in a more developed area, Dreamland should be your pick of where to stay in Uluwatu!

It has trendy, newer builds, beach clubs, villas and resorts — great for groups of friends and people who want to enjoy more beach party vibes!

If resorts aren’t your style, this area may feel over-developed and pricey.

Budget-Friendly Hostels

As someone who often travels solo, my budget-friendly accommodation finds tend to be hostels. I love that I can book a single bed for a reasonable price and still be able to enjoy a social environment and make travel friends!

When I’m looking to book a hostel there are a few key things I’m looking for in the description and reviews based on my travel preferences, and I’ve made sure to that the two hostels I’ve recommended below meet these criteria:

• Social, but not a party hostel
• Easy access to common areas to meet other travelers
• High cleanliness standards mentioned in the reviews
• Comfortable/spacious bunks with curtains for privacy

Some nice-to-haves that I appreciate but don’t always find:

• Female-only dorm rooms — I find that they tend to be quieter at night, cleaner, and often have their own ensuite bathroom
• Ensuite dorm bathrooms — I don’t always find these options, but it’s so much more convenient to have a bathroom directly in the dorm rather than having to travel down a hall in the middle of the night to pee 🫣
• Hostel-based activities — these can be trivia nights or group walks around the city; it’s a great way to meet other travelers so that solo trips don’t feel quite so lonely

If these hostels are sold out or don’t work for you, I highly recommend using Hostelworld to filter hostels; I find they tend to have the most reviews and they have tools to connect you to other travelers in your location!

Bali Bobo Hostel: Best Overall Hostel

Bali Bobo Hostel is a great option for a budget-friendly hostel in Uluwatu!

I love that they offer included breakfast and have the option to stay in a female-only dorm or a private room!

Plus, many of the previous reviewers have opted to extend their stays at the hostel, which I believe speaks volumes about the hostel itself!

One thing to note is the location of the hostel: it’s located right at the entrance of the Butik Peninsula — this is very convenient to Ngurah Rai International airport (airport code: DPS), but is a bit farther out from many of the beach areas in Uluwatu, about 30 minutes.

If you stay here, you’ll likely want to rent a scooter to get around, so make sure that you are comfortable driving one before booking your stay!

Home-Bience Hostel: Best for Solo Travelers and Digital Nomads

Home-Bience Hostel is like its own jungle oasis, and is popular with digital nomads and solo travelers.

This hostel has thousands of incredible reviews highlighting things like the:

• friendliness of the staff
• beauty of the hostel and the high cleanliness standards
• many different common areas to relax and socialize — like the pool and gardens

This hostel is located in the central area of the peninsula: so it’s also convenient to the airport and about 20-30 minutes away from the beaches. You can rent a scooter on site when you’re ready to explore!

Mid-Range Hotels

I found mid-range to have a very wide variety of meanings in Bali.

For the purposes of this post, I’m considering mid-range to be a per-night rate of $30-$75 USD for a standard private room and bathroom.

I’ve also made sure to recommend hotels that have pools on the property; on my own trip to Bali, one of my favorite daily routines was spending an hour or two relaxing in the pool during the peak afternoon heat!

If you’d like to do some additional searching on your own, I found Agoda to have the widest availability for booking accommodations around Bali, but I liked to double check reviews on Booking.com and Google Reviews before finalizing my bookings!

Tempekan Nyang Nyang: Best Overall Mid-Range Accommodation

The Tempekan Nyang Nyang falls somewhere in between budget and mid-range — and for my friend and I, it was the perfect place to start our Bali trip!

This property is located about 10-15 minutes from several of the main attractions in Uluwatu, like the Uluwatu Temple and Bingin Beach, so it’s easy to get from place to place using Grab ride shares or with your own scooter.

It is on a main road, but because it is a little outside the main area of Uluwatu, it felt very quiet and private.

The Tempekan Nyang Nyang is also a smaller property — with only seven rooms — and with the pool located right outside the rooms, it often felt like I had a private pool to myself!

Swiss-Belresort Pecatu: Best for Mid-Range Serenity

Looking at the photos of the Swiss-Belresort Pecatu, I’m not sure I you could pull me away from the incredible pool area with it’s numerous day beds, gorgeous pools, and overall serene feeling!

But, once I was able to leave the pool, it would be super convenient to everything on my Uluwatu itinerary since the hotel is just 15 minutes away from all the top highlights in the area!

Previous guests also loved the:

• Numerous breakfast options included with the stay
• The spaciousness and cleanliness of the rooms

Salty Prana Retreat Center: Best for Yogis and Wellness Aficionados

This is a bit more of a unique recommendation, but with Bali being a popular place for yoga retreats, I thought it was fitting to include an accommodation option for the Yogis (or those aspiring to be)!

The Salty Prana Retreat Center sits on the Southern part of the Bukit Peninsula, and despite being a more secluded hotel, it has easy accessibility to nearby attractions — 10-15 minutes by scooter to most places of interest in Uluwatu!

Salty Prana offers incredible sunset views overlooking the ocean, phenomenal wellness benefits, and a range of accommodation options from dorm rooms for solo travelers to private bedrooms for couples or those who want more privacy.

If you’re looking to spoil yourself with luxury, Bali is the place to do it! You can book some wonderfully bougie properties for much more affordable prices than you could find elsewhere in the world.

In this section, I’m highlighting one resort-style property filled with amenities, and a second, villa-style property which offers a more private experience.

For the ultimate luxurious escape, consider booking the Prasana Villas by Arjani Resorts!

These villas are definitely a bit farther from the main highlights in Uluwatu, but that is why they are the perfect spot for a cozy and secluded getaway! Plus — the hotel offers a free shuttle to nearby attractions.

Each villa comes with it’s own private terrace and pool, and there are options for groups of all sizes: from one bedroom villas for solo travelers and couples to three-bedroom villas with space for up to six guests!

If I were to go back to Bali, this would be my pick for where to stay in Uluwatu if I just wanted to relax and reset for a few nights.

Here’s what previous guests are raving about:

If you do decide to book at the Prasana Villas, just be aware that it is not walkable and you will need transportation to the main areas of Uluwatu. Again, there is a free shuttle provided for distances less than 5km from the villas; otherwise, Grab or Gojek ride shares can be used!
