Thinking About Biking the Acadia Carriage Roads? Just Get the E-Bike

When my friend came back from Acadia National Park raving about his experience and specifically how incredible the Carriage Roads were, I knew it was something I wanted to experience for myself.

Even though I knew I wanted to bike the Carriage Roads, I wasn’t sure if it would be feasible for me: my friend is an avid cyclist, and while I definitely know how to ride a bike, I only do so a couple times a year and typically for short, flat, leisurely rides.

After some research, I found a few e-bike rental options in Acadia, and decided to book one for myself.

In my opinion, an e-bike is absolutely the way to go for the Carriage: choosing to rent an e-bike in Acadia NP was the difference between having an absolutely miserable and exhausting day versus enjoying the highlight of my trip!

E-Bike vs Regular Bike in Acadia: What to Know Before You Choose

My Experience Renting an E-Bike in Acadia

I booked my trip to Acadia National Park fairly last minute, and only had about two weeks to figure out all my plans and activities.

I knew based on my friend’s recommendation that I wanted to bike along the Carriage Roads, but I was really nervous: I can ride a bike and do enjoy doing so every once in a while, but it’s not something I do regularly and definitely not something I do when hills are involved.

I spent way too long debating whether I felt confident enough to bike the Carriage Roads — so long, in fact, that I showed up to Bar Harbor without booking anything.

The morning of my second day, I finally decided to check if any e-bikes were still available. They were! I booked one for 9:30am and rushed over…only to learn I had accidentally booked it for the same day next month. 😭 And of course, they had no more bikes available.

Determined not to let my own chaos ruin the day, I walked around Bar Harbor until I found another rental shop — and miracle of miracles, they had one bike left for a late afternoon pickup.

Honestly? It ended up being the best mistake. Instead of joining the giant 9:30am rush of e-bikers, I started at 2pm when almost everyone was leaving. I had the trails basically to myself.

Renting an e-bike for the Acadia Carriage Roads was absolutely the right move for me — and I think it would be for most travelers — it allowed me to see way more than I would have otherwise been able BOTH in terms of making it up some of the inclines AND by helping maintain my energy levels with the pedal-assist.

Take it from me: don’t wait until the last minute — book your Acadia e-bike rental early!

Now that I’ve had the experience, I can confidently say that I probably could have done the carriage roads on a regular bike, but I definitely would have been miserable and shortened my route.

Why an E-Bike Is the Better Option for Most Travelers

After this experience, I have become a big fan of e-bikes in general, but let’s go through the biggest reasons I think an e-bike makes sense for most travelers in Acadia National Park.

The Hills Are No Joke

A typical gravel incline on the Carriage Roads—beautiful but challenging.

While I spent the majority of the day on the lower levels of my “pedal-assist,” I rode about 25 miles in a single day.

Yes, there are some flat areas, but for the most part it felt like a consistent, gradual incline.

And then the hills would come up… and let me tell you, I was really happy to have an extra boost of power when I came up on the steep inclines. The e-bike is the only reason I was able to summit a mountain.

Plus, by the end of my route, even the low-grade inclines were feeling rough, because let’s be very clear, you will still be working on an e-bike! 💪

You Still Get a Great Workout

Speaking of a workout, being on e-bike does not automatically mean everything will be a breeze!

Only Class 1 e-bikes are allowed inside of the park which means you only get the power boost while you are actively pedalling.

I was still plenty sore the following morning from the 25 miles I had ridden even with the power boost!

You’ll See More Without Burning Out

Lakeside sections of the Carriage Roads you can reach with ease on an e-bike.

Not only is the e-bike great for climbing steep inclines, I loved using it as a way to keep my energy levels balanced throughout the day.

For example, I started off with my e-bike set to the lowest setting and then as my legs would start to tire, I would bump it up a level or two. It was so nice to know I could keep going even as I got a bit tired because the bike could offer me a bit of extra support!

Great For Soft Adventure Travelers

One thing I’ve learned about myself is that I love feeling adventurous — especially on my travels — but I’m not extreme about it.

Being on an e-bike in Acadia was the perfect balance of adventure and comfort. You’re working, you’re exploring, you’re immersed in nature, but you also have the ability to slow down and take a break when you need. And isn’t that what you want to be doing in these incredible natural landscapes?

This Is the Choice for 9-5ers With Limited Time

If you’re like me and traveling on limited PTO, an e-bike lets you maximize your day without feeling rushed or exhausted.

Not only will the e-bike help you get farther along the Carriage Roads, it will also help you see things faster!

Because I only had 3 days in Acadia National Park, I wanted to see as much as I could while still enjoying my time and not feeling like I was rushing.

Renting the e-bike helped me do just that — in 4 hours I was able to cover a huge chunk of the Carriage Roads and make it to some of the top spots in Acadia (like Jordan Pond)!

When a Regular Bike Might Make Sense

There are a few situations where a regular bike might be the better fit:

  • if you are an avid cycler in your day-to-day life
  • if you are extremely budget conscious and prefer to keep the activity at a lower price point
  • if you plan to stick to short, flat loops
  • if you genuinely want a difficult workout

So I’ve piqued your interest in e-bikes, but you have a few questions… let’s answer them!

How Long an E-Bike Battery Lasts

How long the e-bike battery lasts will depend on how you are using the e-bike.

I recommend spending the majority of your time on the low- to mid-levels of pedal-assist and then bumping up to the higher levels when you’re very tired or climbing a steep incline.

My rental bike had 5 levels of pedal-assist (5 being the most assisted), and I:

  • spent the majority of my time at levels 2-3
  • dropped down to a level 1 for downhills & when I felt chilly so I could work harder to warm up
  • bumped up to a level 4 to summit a mountain
  • tried out level 5 for just a few minutes while climbing up the mountain before deciding I liked level 4 better

At the end of my 4-hour rental period, I had used up about 2/3 of the battery.

TL;DR: I biked 25 miles and still had 1/3 battery left.

Are E-Bikes Easy to Use?

Yes, e-bikes are very easy to use! I was a bit nervous about renting an e-bike since I had never used one before, but it was super quick to pick up!

As long as you’re comfortable riding a normal bicycle, I think you will be just fine with an e-bike — I found the controls to be very intuitive!

What Types of E-Bikes Are Allowed in Acadia?

Within Acadia National Park, you can only ride Class 1 e-bikes, also known as “pedal assist”.

Basically, you don’t just push a button and go, you have to be actively pedaling and then the bike will give you an extra “boost”.

The e-bike I used had levels 1-5 for assistance:

  • at level 1, I felt like I was basically riding a normal bike
  • levels 2-3 were great when my legs started feeling tired or to help me up gradual inclines
  • level 4 got me up a mountain feeling just a bit winded
  • level 5 made the same mountain feel like I was riding on flat ground

All this to say, you will still be working while riding an e-bike in Acadia, but the pedal assist bikes give you the boost you need to maintain your energy so you’re able to cover more of the park!

Rental Details: Time, Pickup, Gear, and What’s Included

When should I start my e-bike activity?

So, I had read online that you should start your day early so you can enjoy the quiet of the park… well with my mishap booking situation, I had to quickly change my rental period from a 9:30am start time to 2pm start time.

And it ended up being the best thing!

When I went to the Hull’s Cove Visitor Center for the 9:30am booking (because I didn’t realized I had booked the wrong date until I was trying to check in 😩), there were so many people getting ready to start their biking journey.

There were probably over 100 people in the parking lot across the different bike rental companies and most offer rentals every half hour…all this to say, I personally think a slightly later start time gives you a much more peaceful experience.

Best start time: 2-3PM

Instead, I would suggest a late afternoon time slot. I biked from 2-6pm — and while I did see other people on the trails — it felt like I had them to myself for most of the afternoon.

As I was just getting started, most bikers were on their way out, and it was such a peaceful experience to ride on my own and take in all of the park views!

Where Do I Pickup My E-Bike Rental in Acadia?

After booking your e-bike, double check with the rental company for your pickup location.

I found that the majority of rentals brought the e-bikes to the Hull’s Cove Visitor Center; however, some also have the option of picking up in downtown Bar Harbor if you prefer (or miss the standard pick-up time).

Because I had to find a last minute booking, I had to pick up my e-bike from downtown Bar Harbor.

Initially I was a bit worried about having to ride into the park, but the signage to the carriage roads was super clear and easy to find, so I had not trouble getting into the park or finding my way back!

I also found out after the fact that by picking up the e-bike at the rental shop itself, I was able to bypass a super scary hill near Hull’s Cove that causes issues for some bikers.

What Gear Do I Need When Renting an E-Bike in Acadia?

When you’re renting an e-bike in Acadia (and really any time you’re on a bike), make sure that you are wearing a helmet! This should be provided to you by your bike shop.

Some bike shops also offer a bike lock (I didn’t end up using mine since I stayed near my bike most of the day) and a basket or rack for your items.

I brought a small backpack for the day as well which had:

  • a large water bottle
  • snacks
  • my camera & tripod
  • a portable charger
  • sunscreen
  • some extra space to hold my warmer layers

Definitely make sure you bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and some layers — depending on the time of year and level of shade you can go from sweating in a tank top to chilly in a puffer jacket pretty quickly!

Renting an E-Bike in Acadia Is Absolutely Worth It!

As I’m sure you can tell from this article, I am VERY pro renting an e-bike for the carriage roads in Acadia National Park (and you can rent one for yourself here!); deciding to rent one myself was the best decision and I would do it again every time.

Renting an e-bike allows you to see the park without feeling the grueling exhaustion of a regular bike — just the proud sense of accomplishment that you were able to use your body AND see everything you wanted to see.
